Today we conclude the series of messages from Colossians. It certainly has been a good run, and we’ve covered a vast variety of things. Truth be told, Colossian’s is the speaker’s favorite epistle in the New Testament. When really considering it, it does seem to cover the basics—the fundamentals—of the Christian faith, from Paul’s showing that Jesus is God in chapter 1, to the proper balance in living presented in chapter 2, to correct having characters

We conclude our study of Colossians today, and next week we will have a final message on discussing what has already been talked about. Anyhow, starting in verse 12 of Colossians chapter 4: ‘Epaphras, who is one of you, a servant of Christ Jesus, greets you, always struggling on your behalf in his prayers, that you may stand mature and fully assured in all the will of God” (ESV).

Back in chapter 1 of Colossians, we read

Colossians chapter 4, starting in verse 5: “Walk in wisdom toward outsiders, making the best use of the time” (ESV).

Paul’s discussion today moves toward the church’s outside actions, the way they conduct themselves with the outside world. As was pointed out at the beginning of Colossians 3, we are going to live our lives

Colossians chapter 4, starting in verse 2. We pick up today with a study on the privilege of prayer—on the ability to bring things to God and have him hear us. Verse 2 states: “Continue steadfastly in prayer” ((ESV).

Our sentence begins with the word “Continue.” “Continue.” Paul certainly was aware, and certainly had been expecting, that the Colossian believers

Today we move into the setup of the family. Starting in verse 18 of Colossians 3: “Wives, submit to your husbands, as is fitting in the Lord” (ESV).

One could look at this verse from the Apostle Paul as being one of which is out-dated, one of which is no longer for our current day and age in twenty-first century America. Indeed, many have adopted

Colossians 3, starting in verse 15: “And let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, to which indeed you were called in one body.” (ESV).

Before we dive into some of the specifics behind this oneness of peace within the church body, let’s consider a ‘big picture’ perspective of what Paul is talking about. Let’s think about how this peace that we now have

Colossians 3, beginning in verse 11: “Here there is not Greek and Jew, circumcised and uncircumcised, barbarian, Scythian, slave, free; but Christ is all, and in all” (ESV).

Being new creatures in Christ is where we left off the last time, new creations, and Paul expands on that for us today. In this verse, he is telling us something revolutionary. Not so revolutionary to us, here in

Colossians 3, starting in verse 5: “Put to death therefore what is earthly in you” (ESV).

Paul’s focus begins today with us, us as Christians. In fact, that’s going to be his entire focus for us today. Paul is going to zoom in on individual character, and how we are supposed to act, as Christians. We start first with the behaviors that are not supposed to be part of our characters. Sometimes these things

Colossians 3, verse 1: “If then you have been raised with Christ, seek the things that are above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God” (ESV).

Paul begins dealing with us today—with the Colossians—in calling us all to a higher calling. It’s a higher calling. It’s an awareness in the living out of our lives. It’s not just simply living our lives, but actually living them

Today we continue our discussion on appendices and elaborations from Colossians 1 & 2. As stated last week, this will be the last message before breaking for the Holidays, and then the messages will resume in late January for Colossians 3 & 4.

In Colossians 1, Paul appears to indicate a possible loss of salvation for the Christian. And from there were mentioned four different

Now that Colossians 1 & 2 have been completed, today’s objective is to go through some appendices and elaborations of what has previously been stated so as to obtain a richer understanding. This will be completed this week and then also we’ll have another session next week. After that, we will move on to chapters 3 & 4, beginning in latter January.

The first discussion that comes up is this:

Colossians 1:24: “Now I rejoice in my sufferings for your sake" (ESV).

Coming to this verse today, we are presented with something, which, admittedly, seems foreign to us in American society. It seems definitely so. To rejoice in one’s sufferings. We are taught to avoid suffering at all costs. Our society is even geared in that direction. Depending on what position

Beginning at verse 19. Colossians 1:19: “For in him all the fullness of God was pleased to dwell” (ESV).

Upon reading this first, the mind’s first inclination is to see the Son as somehow lesser than the Father—for at first glance, it would appear the verse is implying the Son was created at one point in time or something

Turning in our New Testaments today, we come to Paul’s Letter to the Church of Colossae. The book has come to be known as ‘Colossians.’ While this letter may have been sent from Paul as a response to the threat of false beliefs threatening the brand new church, really, it is an encouragement and overview of what is to be expected from the church and believers in general. Paul—the minister to the
