Since he or she has not been transformed, he or she is not indwelled by the Holy Spirit. And since this is the case, it is impossible for the person to live by the things of God—to practice truth, to follow the Spirit, etc. And this being the case, ultimately the person cannot please God. Even if the person appears to be doing good things externally, in reality some other motive exists behind those good things. They are not being done out a person’s love for God because the person doesn’t know God. So, God doesn’t see these actions by these people as good, even if they may seem good to us outwardly. They’re not counted in God’s eyes toward their credit. In the same way, Christians also can live in the flesh versus the Spirit, as I’ve mentioned, and this also is equally displeasing to God. I already talked about this in Romans chapter 7. A lot of legalistic and heartless Christians do this, and they don’t even realize it. We will discuss this a little more on down the road here in the book of Romans. Yes, a lot can be said on this subject.
