Verse 9: “Let love be genuine. Abhor what is evil; hold fast to what is good. Love one another with brotherly affection. Outdo one another in showing honor. Do not be slothful in zeal, be fervent in spirit, serve the Lord. Rejoice in hope, be patient in tribulation, be constant in prayer. Contribute to the needs of the saints and seek to show hospitality.” I’m not going to go over every one one of Paul’s points here, but let’s go over some of them. Notice that love is not a legalistic thing. We are to love with a genuine love, and not unwillingly or begrudgingly. We all love different people, and it’s actually not our responsibility to love every single person within our church. Truly, that would kill us if we tried. We are to call sin for what it is, sin. That doesn’t mean we are faultfinders among church members. That’s not what we’re called to do. We don’t like sin, especially the big sins, and we don’t tolerate those sins within our own lives.
